Here we will take a look at 10 songs with California in the title. Hope you enjoy.

1. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Dani California

Despite the number of top quality tunes the Red Hot Chili Peppers have released in the UK they have found top 10 hits quite hard to come by. In fact, they have only broke in to the top 10 4 times. On two of those ocassions they hit a peak of number 2, first with By The Way in July 2002 and secondly with Dani California in May 2006.

2. Eagles – Hotel California

Despite being able to score a plethora of number ones in the US, the Eagles only once managed to penetrate the top 10 in the UK. In April 1977 Hotel California reached a peak of number 8 in the UK charts, spending a total of 10 weeks on the chart.

3. Mamas & The Papas – California Dreamin’

This song was the debut chart hit in the UK for the Mamas & The Papas, reaching a peak of number 23 in April 1966. Many years later, in August 1997, it was re-released and it reached a peak of number 9!

This classic Beach Boys track was released in the UK in late 1965 and climbed to a peak of number 26 on the UK charts. In more recent years the Beach Boys management tried to sue Snoop Dogg (see below).

5. Katy Perry – California Gurls

This song reached number one in both the US and the UK but also had a bit of notoriety because of Snoop Dogg! Master rapper Snoop Dogg featured on the song and sang the line ‘I wish they all could be Californiagirls’ – which the management team for the Beach Boys tried to sue over, arguing it was a rip off from their own hit California Girls! The irony I suppose is how the breakthrough song for the Beach Boys, Surfin’ USA, was a straight rip off of the Chuck Berry song Sweet Little Sixteen!

6. Phantom Planet – California

California based band Phantom Planet recorded this song for their 2002 album The Guest. It was soon picked up as the theme tune to the Television programme The OC, on the back of which it became a top 10 hit in the UK, reaching a peak of number 9 in March 2005.

7. 2Pac – California Love

This song, featuring Dr Dre, was the first chart hit for 2Pac in the UK, reaching a peak of number 6 in Aprl 1996.

8. Rihanna – California King Bed

This 2010 release from Rihanna reached a peak of number 8 in the UK charts and number 37 in the US. It did reach the number one spot on the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart!

What links UK group Wedding Present and Elvis Presley? They are the only two recording artists to release 12 singles in the UK in one year. The Wedding Present did it in 1992, releasing a single every single month. California was their June effort and reached a peak of number 16 in the UK charts.

10. Move – California Man

The Move may have been best remembered for their 1967 hit Flowers In The Rain which hit a peak of number 2 in the UK charts – it was the first song played on Radio 1. Their last chart hit in the UK before the band members went their own way was California Man, which reached a peak of number 7 in May 1972.
