With the sun coming out and the temperature soaring, it really must be the start of the Summer. What better time then to have a look at 10 Reggae songs!

1. Apache Indian – Boom Shack-A-Lack

This song appeared on the Apache Indian EP Nuff Vibes which reached a peak of number 5 in the UK charts in August 1993. Worldwide this song has been used to help sell over 70 different products, the most famous of which, in the UK at least, was the 2000 ‘nerd’ Lynx advert – which starred Jennifer Aniston!

2. Millie – My Boy Lollipop

Arguably one of the most famous and popular recordings by a Jamaican artist. It has been used in many films and TV adverts, including the 2009 T-Mobile’s ‘Life’s For Sharing’ Campaign’. As for the song itself, it reached a peak of number 2 in the UK charts as far back as March 1964.

3. Jimmy Cliff – The Harder They Come

This song has been covered by Jerry Garcia, Joe Jackson and punk band Rancid, among others, but it is the original that remains the most popular! It has been used in many adverts on Sky TV over the years and especially throughout the coverage of England’s cricket tour of the West Indies in 2004!

4. Chaka Demus & Pliers – Tease Me

Jamaican duo Chaka Demus & Pliers first crashed in to the UK charts with this song in the summer of 1993, reaching a peak of number 3. It has been used in many TV adverts including ones by Mars and DFS!

5. Toots & The Maytals – Broadway Jungle

This song, which has also been recorded by Prince Buster, failed to become a chart hit in the UK due to it being released by two different labels! In more recent years it was used in an Adidas advert during Euro 2000!

6. Desmond Decker – You Can Get It If You Really Want

This Jimmy Cliff penned song became a huge hit in the UK for Desmond Dekker in August 1970, peaking at number 2 in the charts. It has been used in many adverts over the years including one for DFS.

7. Jimmy Cliff – Wonderful World, Beautiful People

The second Jimmy Cliff sung song on this list (and third he wrote!), this song was first released in 1969. It seems to have had national worth as it has been used in adverts for both the National Geographic and the National Lottery.

8. The Ethiopians – Train To Skaville

Well there had to be at least one song included here with ‘ska’ in the title! What do DFS, Sky TV and Jacob’s Cream Crackers have in common? They have all used this song in adverts!

9. Gregory Isaacs – Night Nurse

This is the 1982 original version of a song that was later covered by Mick Hucknall and the Riddim Twin’s. It was also covered by Sly & Robbie, whose version appeared in a Nytol advert for Night Nurse!

10. Dawn Penn – Love Me (No, No, No)

It was as far back as 1967 that Dawn Penn first released this song but this one was a re-working which was released in the Summer of 1994, reaching a peak of number 3 in the UK charts. The song has been used in adverts for both Churchill Insurance and Nissan cars.
